Monumental Arch
The monumental arch represents the only architectural element visible today of an 18th century stately home, located in the historic center of the city.
After numerous documentaries searches it was possible to attribute the residence (hypothetically) to the Marquis of Botrugno Carlo Maria Castriota, a frequent visitor to Castro due to his work and commercial activities. In 1781 these activities prompted the Marquis to build a ship entitled "Santissima Annunziata" in the port of Castro, as the documents kept in the ancient capitular archive of the Cathedral.
The monumental arch, despite its decorative simplicity, refers to the rustication of the side ashlars, to the Salento buildings of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, whose facades were characterized by the same decorative motif.
